Community
InvolvementThe
Blackhawk Chapter is out in the community, encouraging and promoting public awareness
of railroads and the importance of railroad history. Operation
Lifesaver Blackhawk
Chapter members fully support the goals of Operation
Lifesaver, a national, nonprofit safety education group dedicated to public
safety around trains and rairoad property. Blackhawk
Chapter members were on board Union Pacific's Operation Lifesaver Special
to show local elected and law enforcement officials the grade crossing and tresspassing
issues the railroad experiences daily. |  |

Passenger Rail Advocacy
Blackhawk Chapter members are involved in the Heritage Corridor Alliance, a collection
of officials from on-line communities that are is pushing for increased service
on Metra's ex-GM&O Heritage Corridor line between and Chicago and Joliet. |
RailCamp
Scholarship Since
2007, the Blackhawk Chapter has sponsored area high
school students at the NRHS's popular RailCamp for teens. The
Blackhawk Chapter is one of the few NRHS chapters that provides full scholarships
to this popular and influential program. The
Blackhawk Chapter is always looking for young men and women who may be interested

Parks The
Blackhawk Chapter addressed the village council to encourage community support
for the building of a viewing platform and railroad equipment display in Homewood,
Illinois, which opened in spring of 2007. |
Railroad
Depot Restoration The
Blackhawk Chapter has been involved in numerous depot restoration projects throughout
Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. For a closer look at these projects, go to

Events The
Blackhawk Chapter participated in the opening ceremonies for the new commuter
station at Tinley
Park (Oak Park Avenue) in 2004 with a display of classic Rock Island photographs
and memorabilia. The
Blackhawk Chapter also participated in the sesquicentennial celebration of
Dwight, Illinois - an important station on the Chicago & Alton. |
Blackhawk
Chapter members volunteer on the annual CN/IC
Christmas Train. A holiday tradition for over 30 years, the CN/IC Christmas
Train brings Santa Claus and the Christmas spirit to the rural communities of
Ford, Iroquois and Kankakee counties in Illinois. |  |

Planning The Blackhawk
Chapter provided historical background information for the Illinois
Valley Commuter Rail Feasibility Study,
a preliminary survey for proposed commuter
rail service on the former Rock Island from Ottawa to Joliet, Illinois. |
In
addition to the above activities, many individual Blackhawk Chapter members are
involved in volunteering at railroad museums, supporting railroad advocacy groups,
promotion of the railfan hobby, model railroading and educating the public of
the railroads' historical significance and role in today's world.
